Lip Reading Classes

Lip Reading Classes

Venue: 51 Rowlands Road
Worthing
West Sussex
BN11 3JN

What is the aim of the course?
Improve interpersonal communication skills and rebuild self-confidence

What level is the course?
Beginners

What will the course cover?
We will examine how much of our language is visible and how to cope more easily with non-visible language. Each week we will discover other clues that help us to join in conversations we are beginning to feel excluded from. Visitors (when available) will demonstrate equipment we might find useful at home.
Lip-reading classes are lots of concentration and hard work but we have fun too! It is relaxing to be with other people who know just what you are going through because they experience similar difficulties in our ‘hearing’ world

How will  you be taught?
Lip reading the tutor and peers - Pair work – groupwork – handouts – quizzes – games –

What can you expect to achieve?
The content and outcomes of the course will be discussed with you and may be adapted to meet your needs and those of the group. As a guide by the end of the course you should be able to:
Identify some consonant shapes when seen on the lips.
Identify some vowel shapes when seen on the lips.
Be able to follow the gist of a short passage said without voice by the tutor.
Speak more clearly for hard of hearing people.
Adapt your environment to accommodate your identified communication needs.
Identify a variety of other speech ‘clues’ and coping strategies.
Have information about other agencies offering support.
Have seen how the ear works (and why it sometimes doesn’t!)

How will you know you are progressing?
Your tutor will talk over your learning with you at regular intervals. Whenever you wish, you will be able to talk to your tutor about how you are doing.

What will you need for the first session?
Lots of courage to come into the room and meet us!
A pen – the tutor carries spares!
Your sense of humour

Are there any other costs?
40p for a cup of tea

Will you have a chance to give your views on the course?
There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end – but your comments and suggestions will be warmly welcomed by the tutor at any time.

The Course Tutor:

Cost: £3 per session (£24 in total, payable in adviacne)

Dates: Every Thursday

Time: 10:30- 12:30
