Gerry Turton

Worthing Services Manager

Having been deaf and a hearing aid user all her life, Gerry has an understanding of the impact hearing loss can have on people. Gerry's working background is mainly office work but during the past 13 years she has worked with people with various degrees of hearing and dual sensory loss having gained experience from equipment assessments, communication support administration and promoting Deaf Awareness.

Gerry's deafness was diagnosed, following a fall at 3 years of age, but she was fortunate to have very supportive parents and they began a NDCS (National Deaf Childrens Society) parent group in Surrey. Following speech therapy Gerry attended a hearing school but was unable to follow lessons so she was transferred to a PHU (Partially Hearing Unit) then attended boarding school. It was during Gerry's time at the boarding school that she learnt to sign fluently even though it was against the school rules!

Gerry started with the organisation in May 2010 and she enjoys working with the staff and meeting people as they come into the centre. Gerry said it makes everything worthwhile when people appreciate the work and help the organisation provides.
